Face Of Australia Dark Side Review | Part One

Sunday, 20 July 2014

Hi lovelies,

So, today I have some really, really, really lovely polishes to show you. Normally, I'm pretty good about my polish buying. I don't do extremely extravagant shopping sprees and I normally keep my 'Absolutely Must Have' polish list to a length that won't break the bank. All in all, it means that I generally never end up buying an entire collection.

But.... When I was walking through my local Priceline last week, I came across these babies and I just knew that I had to own them all. But I was very frugal - I fought my my inner polish demon and only bought half. I felt very proud of myself.

And then I went back the next day and bought the rest. :)

Well, actually, technically, my sister bought one of them, so I didn't buy the entire collection, but at least I have the entire collection available for my use. :)

Face of Australia have brought out some really great polishes recently (See my rave about their Carnivale ones here) and these are no different. They are really gorgeous polishes and also, are named after famous villains. For me, this was what really cinched the deal. How could I pass up the opportunity to tell people I was wearing Voldemort or Darth Vader on my fingertips?!?!?

First up, we have Mystique, named after the amazing villain-but-not-quite from the X-men series.

This polish is a beautiful blue-y green creme that is opaque in just two coats. It is really shiny (shown here without top-coat) and dries pretty fast. My only quibble with this polish is that it is quite green when , compared to Mystique's actual colouring, who is remarkably more blue. But to be honest, that's just my inner nerd speaking and objectively, the colour is really, really nice.

Next is Maleficent, whom everyone knows after the recent movie starring Angelina Jolie

Please excuse my bloody cuticles - I swatched Jafar before I did Maleficent and I didn't realise how bad my cuticles were until I had uploaded them all...
This is a very, very dark purple creme that has an almost jelly finish to it. In the bottle it looked almost black, which I was not so keen on (this was the one my sister bought), but came out much more purple on the actual nail. This was three coats, but you could potentially get away with two if you were a little more careful and thicker in your application. This is without topcoat - look at the shine!

This next one is Jafar, named for the villain in Aladdin (which is an amazing and very under-rated movie)

This is by far the squishiest and most jelly-like of all the polishes and is a very dark blood red. It is a very vampy polish and one of my favourites, though it is also the most sheer. This required 3 coats on most nails and 4 coats on a couple. I also think this is very true to the character of Jafar. If I was creating a polish to honour him, this is definitely the sort of thing I would have gone for.

Last but not least is The Wicked Witch of the West - it's namesake being of course, the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz.

Again, it's a gorgeous polish and another of my favourites in terms of colour, but I just don't think it does it's namesake justice. What I would have liked to have seen is something with a little more neon to give it that sickly, radioactive, unnatural look that the original villain had. This is two coats with no top coat.

In general, I think all the polishes are pretty good. They have good consistency in terms of formula, which is also really good and they retail at an affordable price! Find them in your local Big W, Priceline, K-Mart or online at FashionAddict.
